New Rifle Company to Open in Former Maine Bushmaster Plant
06/14/2011 03:45 PM ET

The new company, called Windham Weaponry, will initially employ about half of the 73 employees who worked at the former Bushmaster plant, company officials told the Portland Press Herald.

Guns will once again be made at the former Bushmaster manufacturing plant in Windham. The former owner of Bushmaster Firearms International LLC and other investors have created a new rifle company at the plant, located in the Windham Business Park.

The new company will be called Windham Weaponry, officials told the Portland Press Herald. Windham Weaponry will make rifles and employ up to half of the 73 employees who worked at the Bushmaster plant, which shut down earlier this year. More employees may be added before the end of the year, the paper reports.

Windham Weaponry will begin production in July, with the first shipments scheduled to go out in September, according to the paper.

Bushmaster founder Richard Dyke is leading the investor group. Dyke sold Bushmaster in April 2006 to New York City-based private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management.
