CANAAN, Conn. - Connecticut environmental police say they've charged a Waterbury man with negligent hunting after he shot another hunter while aiming at a pheasant in Canaan.

Department of Environmental Protection police say 65-year-old Alden Brooks killed the bird, but also hit 35-year-old Peter Paveglio of West Hartford on Saturday at the Robbins Swamp Wildlife Management Area.

Authorities say Paveglio was treated at Sharon Hospital for face, neck and arm injuries. They say he was walking across an open field with another hunter when he was shot on opening day for small game hunting.

Brooks was released on a promise to appear in Bantam Superior Court on Nov. 2.

Brooks said Tuesday that he aimed at the bird but some of the pellets from the shot hit the other man by accident.
