At least 10 people injured in shooting at Navy building in Washington

At least 10 people have been shot — with multiple fatalities — at a Navy building in Washington, U.S. Navy authorities said Monday.

A Navy Yard spokesman said the suspected gunman remains active and possibly barricaded following reports of shots fired at around 8:20 a.m. at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in southeast Washington. A U.S. Navy official later told Reuters that it's possible more than one shooter is involved, although that has not been verified.

Police sources told The Washington Post that three shooters, including one in military fatigues, were involved in the incident.

Two law officers among 10 people injured in naval facility shooting

Washington (CNN) -- A gunman dressed in all black fired shots Monday inside the U.S. Navy Yard, injuring at least 10 people, according to the Navy and a Washington police spokesman.

The U.S. Navy tweeted there are "several confirmed injuries with reports of fatalities."

The injured included a Washington police officer who has been hospitalized, and a base security guard officer, said Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Saray Leon.

The incident occurred at 8:20 a.m. when several shots were fired inside the headquarters for Naval Sea Systems Command in southeast Washington. An "active shooter" remained inside the building, the Navy said.

Helicopters hovered overhead as police with riot and SWAT team gear swarmed the scene.

Police spokesman Chris Kelly described the suspect as an adult male, about 6 feet tall with a bald head and medium complexion, dressed in a black top and black jeans.

Two witnesses told CNN affiliate WJLA that they heard a fire alarm go off in the building where they worked, then saw a man with a rifle down the hallway as they exited the building.

"He aimed the gun and fired our way," a man who identified himself as Todd Brundidge told WJLA, adding, "I couldn't believe it."

Gunman opens fire at Navy Yard in Washington, killing at least 4

A gunman armed with a rifle and perhaps a handgun opened fire Monday inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard — killing at least four people and wounding at least six more, including two police officers, authorities said.

SWAT officers swarmed the building, the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command, and a shooter there was believed to be wounded, a source told NBC News. More than two hours after the first reports of gunfire, tactical teams entered a second building at the Navy Yard, but it was not clear whether there was more than one gunman.

The numbers didn't fluctuate, the media just reported inaccurate numbers

What is security like at the Washington Navy Yard?

When a reporter asked Navy Cmdr. Tim Jirus whether he felt Building 197 at the Washington Navy Yard was secure, he answered the only way he could Monday.

"Not today."

Thirteen people were killed, including the suspected gunman, when at least one shooter opened fire in Building 197 at the Navy Yard.

Located in the heart of the nation's capital, it's home to high-level naval personnel. About 3,000 people work at the Navy Yard, including junior service members and civilian employees.

It's supposed to be a secure facility. So what went wrong?

"It'll be interesting to see as this develops who the shooter is, how he got in, those type of questions answered. I think right now a lot of people are wondering, you know, just how safe the building is, or how safe the office environment is," Jirus said.

The FBI has identified the suspected shooter as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old military contractor from Texas.

A contractor ID removed from the suspect's body matched the appearance of the dead man, a law enforcement source said.

Police were initially looking for two other people in connection with the shooting, but one was subsequently cleared. The other may still be on the loose.

Jirus described how access typically works.

"I have a CAC card," he said, referring to a common access card, the standard ID for active duty uniformed service personnel, Selected Reserve, Defense Department civilian employees and eligible contractor personnel.

The ID also is the main card used to grant physical access to buildings and other controlled spaces.

"As a military person, we all have badges that we have to key the door to get in -- that allows us automatic access to the building.

"But again, if you're a contractor, if you're coming to visit the building, you can go through security and walk right in -- not walk right in, but you would check in through security," Jirus said.

CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr has visited the Navy Yard various times.

Families wait for news of D.C. Navy Yard victims

In her experience, security is extensive. Everyone must have clearance to be there or valid identification that allows them entry.

If you were an employee of the facility, you would have a parking sticker and go through a checkpoint, Starr said. A guard would see your sticker, know that you were authorized to be on the compound and allow you to proceed.

If you were a visitor, as Starr would be, you'd call ahead and have an appointment. Guards would have your name at the gate, and you would be escorted to wherever you needed to go.

"So the question, of course, is -- how did somebody get a weapon onto the base?" she asked.

"Look, it is always possible in these types of situations, theoretically, to find your way around security measures. Somebody could have had a weapon in their car, unseen, hidden and taken it out.

"There's any number of ways it might have happened," Starr said.
