There is a fairly well-written article in the Hartford Courant entitled:

They touch on the rifle's advanced design and popularity with an estimated 5 million AR-15s in private hands:"The AR-15, which isn't a brand but rather a generic design, accounts for an estimated 60 percent of all civilian rifle sales in the United States and perhaps a quarter of all firearms sold, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry group based in Newtown."
The article is surprisingly factual and ends with a quote from a retired West Hartford police detective; "Nothing evil — it's just a firearm that works."
