Meriden (WTNH) - An elderly woman and her grandchild were locked up in their own bathroom for hours Thursday afternoon after two men stormed their apartment stealing electronics, jewelry and about $10,000 in cash.
It happened around 3pm on Camp Street.
Police say two men broke into the apartment and forced the 70-year old woman and her two year old grandchild into the bathroom at gunpoint and then ransacked the house.
"They are okay, but they were really scared. They didn't touch her or anything like that. They showed her a gun a couple of times," said Kamal Rahman, who lives in the apartment but was not home at the time of the incident.
The men got away with a television, a DVD player, about $10,000 in cash and jewelry, including a child's 22-karat gold tiara, a family heirloom. Police don't believe this was a random act, rather the crooks knew exactly where to go and what they were going to find.
"The method of entry, the length of time in which they were in the apartment, the fact that they brought tools with them," said Detective Mike Merrigan, Meriden Police Department.
The family owns a small business in the Meriden Mall and say they lost everything in the burglary.
