Business as usual in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — Police are searching for two men who shot a 17-year-old Hillhouse High School student during a robbery Tuesday morning.

Police and medics were dispatched to Dixwell Avenue near West Gibbs Street at 8:36 a.m. for a report of a young man who'd been shot. When police arrived, they found the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the right hip.

The young man was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment.

Police are working to determine whether the shooting was part of a robbery, or occurred for another reason.

Police Chief Dean Esserman was at the scene, but went to the hospital with Hillhouse principal Kermit Carolina, schools superintendent Garth Harries and the victim's mother.

Police said the victim is in guarded but stable condition.

One suspect in the armed robbery is described as a light complexioned black male, 17 to 19 years old, with a thin build, police said. He is clean shaven and has his hair in corn rows or braids, police said. He was wearing black pants, and a black and white plaid jacket.

The second suspect is described a dark complexioned black man, 17 to 19, with a medium build, police said. He is clean shaven. Police said he was wearing all black clothing and a hooded sweatshirt. He was armed with a black handgun.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to phone New Haven detectives at 203-946-6304. Police said callers can remain anonymous.
