What do the rest of you use on state land for whitetail?

I stumbled onto a Marlin 512 and it has been more than adequate. (Good price too at $300) I've been launching Remington Copper Solids out of it for several years now.

Clean hole in and out with 2 3/4, so no need for the 3's.

I use a Mossberg 500 with their rifled barrel. It's got a rail mount attached to the barrel, which I have a 2x scope on.

~4 inch groups at 100 yards, more than enough accuracy for any range I'll actually be seeing a deer at.

I've got one of these barrels for a 500 if anyone is interested.

Which slugs do you usually shoot?

Mossberg doesn't advertise compatibility between them but it is general believed that 500/535/590/830/835 barrels all interchange safely.

I use the Hornady SSTs. They're kind of pricey, but I only go through a few boxes each season (mostly for target practice).

Mossy 500 with a smooth 24" slug barrel with rifle sights, Remington 2 3/4" slugs. Nothing fancy, I shoot about a box of 5 a year.

Yeah, high end slugs aren't cheap but I look at it the same you do. I only run through a couple of boxes a year plus the (hopefully) one round during deer season. :D

I bought one of those for my brother about a year and a half ago from NGX. He hasn't had a chance at a deer with it yet, but it sure is a tack driver!
