For HD, I'm a big fan of the Mossberg 590A1 for HD. I like the pump shotguns for HD because there is no other sound as distinguishing as that of a pump shotgun being racked...that alone will often send any intruders running for cover if they know what is good for them.
My PD carries 14" Mossberg 590A1's for duty use in our cruisers. We used to carry the Remington 870's for duty, but we switched to the Mossbergs several year ago. I'm not sure why we did so. However, I prefer the Mossberg to the Remington...to me the Mossberg seems more sturdy and solid and I like the placement of the safety better with a rifle stock. I do think that the Remington is better if you utilize a pistol grip due to its location.
So, due to weapon familiarity and for training purposes, I purchased a 14" Mossberg 590A1 and added a Surefire weaponlight. This is my primary HD long gun. A light source is
MANDATORY for
any HD weapon so as to positively identify your potential target! Lest it be a family member, such as a teen son/daughter sneaking back into the house...that could be tragic.
I also like the Mossberg 930SPX semi-auto and plan to get one in the near future, but I intend to use it for competition purposes.
Below is my 14" Mossberg 590A1 with Hogue Youth stock and Surefire 621FA Weaponlight. It has an overall lenght (OAL) of 35 inches, which is a nice compact size for manuevering inside the house.
