Do you have a shotgun dedicated for the house? Looking for input prior to purchase. I'm considering a Rem 870 HD. I figure I really can't go wrong with the 870 dependability but would like to hear what others use.

Thanks

Mossberg 930 SPX here. Serious home artillery. Out at Blue trails I was shooting 5" groups at 75 yards. Resighted to 25 feet at Glastonbury.

So far I've put 130 rounds through it without a hiccup.

The 930 is an auto right? How does it handle the low recoil rounds? Cycle them ok? I have a 870 and love it in the pump department.

It's a semi-auto which is why I traded my 590 A1 for it. I shot quite a few Federal low recoil rounds with no problem. Pump is fine, too, except pumps are hard to cycle from the prone position.

The only reason i never got a 930 was because i didnt know about the low recoil. Thanks for the info.

I got quite lucky a few years ago at the Springfield gun show. Everyone was packing up to leave on the last day and I walked by a fellow who had a Winchester Defender Model 1300 and I asked him what he wanted for it. He said $100. So I just purchased my home defense shotgun.

H&R Pardner pump. $200 new at Dick's. Most 870 parts will fit, being a clone of one.

I HAVE A MOSBERG MAVERICK 88 EIGHT SHOT PUMP . THAT I BOUGHT NEW FOR 200 BUCKS , COMES WITH BOTH A REGULAR STOCK AND PISTOL GRIP STOCK. SHOOTS GREAT. I'VE ADDED A HEAT SHIELD WITH GHOST RING SIGHTS , ATI ADJUSTABLE STOCK WITH DROP STOCK SPACER AND SIDE SADDLE WILL POST PICS LATER . ALSO ALL MOSBERG 500 PARTS WORK FOR THE STOCK.

For HD, I'm a big fan of the Mossberg 590A1 for HD. I like the pump shotguns for HD because there is no other sound as distinguishing as that of a pump shotgun being racked...that alone will often send any intruders running for cover if they know what is good for them.

My PD carries 14" Mossberg 590A1's for duty use in our cruisers. We used to carry the Remington 870's for duty, but we switched to the Mossbergs several year ago. I'm not sure why we did so. However, I prefer the Mossberg to the Remington...to me the Mossberg seems more sturdy and solid and I like the placement of the safety better with a rifle stock. I do think that the Remington is better if you utilize a pistol grip due to its location.

So, due to weapon familiarity and for training purposes, I purchased a 14" Mossberg 590A1 and added a Surefire weaponlight. This is my primary HD long gun. A light source is MANDATORY for any HD weapon so as to positively identify your potential target! Lest it be a family member, such as a teen son/daughter sneaking back into the house...that could be tragic.

I also like the Mossberg 930SPX semi-auto and plan to get one in the near future, but I intend to use it for competition purposes.

Below is my 14" Mossberg 590A1 with Hogue Youth stock and Surefire 621FA Weaponlight. It has an overall lenght (OAL) of 35 inches, which is a nice compact size for manuevering inside the house.

Yeah, she is a BEAST! Those are factory installed ghost ring sights with a tritium insert on the front blade. The only things I want to get to complete my shotty are a GG&G single point adapter, mounted between the stock and receiver, and a side saddle...I saw a sweet one from 3-GunGear.com that a velcro base attaches to the side of the receiver and the velcro-backed side saddle attaches to the base. You can carry additonal velcro-backed side saddles on your chest/battle rig so that you can quickly replace your ammo sources.

Nice! I may have to follow your lead on the upgrades. I have a basic 590 with factory installed GRS, Red front ramp. Tried a couple of different slings. the "combat sling" I have on it now, not really liking. May just go with an old school leather GI model...

I'm still looking for my sling options also. I'm considering single point or adjustable slings by VTAC (Viking Tactics), Blue Force Gear, or a PIG (sold by SKD Tactical).
